We've added a finer fidelity of choice of communications you are able to receive from ecycler.

From the dashboard (discarder or collector) click on the "My Account" link. Under the Communications header, you will have the option to check (Opt-in) or uncheck (opt-out) of any of the following options:

- Occasional marketing materials (newsletters, offers, etc.)
- ecycler website alerts
- Special announcements
- Friend invite accepted

More options will be added in the future.

We are in the process of again simplifying the registration process. The following changes have been made in an attempt to streamline the sign-up flow:

Your address will no longer be required at registration. It will, however, be required to complete a transaction. Once in the Give away recyclables flow, the system will request your street address in order to notify the collector the location of the recyclables.

Your city and state will automatically be identified via the ZIP code as entered during the registration process.

We have removed the Marketing Opt-in flag from the registration flow. The Marketing Opt-in flag (and several new communication flags) will be more prominently displayed in your dashboard. This allows you to more finely tune the way in which communications occur between you and ecycler.

As always, we would be happy to hear your suggestions to further the ecycler experience.

We had a SNAFU on 22 May 2010 where we "lost" several registered users. If you signed-up at ecycler between 8 May 2010 and 22 May 2010, your account may have been accidentally removed from the system during one of our routine clean-ups. Our database script decided to be a bit too aggressive and wiped approximately 50 users from the system--most have been restored from database backups, but a few are completely lost. We apologize for this inconvenience. If you are one of the discarders or collectors that had an ecycler account, but it is now gone, please sign-up again. For your efforts, we'd be happy to send to you one of our ecycler re-usable bags at no cost to you. Please contact us through the Contact Us form and let us know your username.

We've completely gutted and rebuilt the ecycler State Machine. Among some minor issues, this will solve two major problems:

1) Deleted accounts were causing issues with existing transactions. The new state machine addresses those deleted discarders or collectors and their transactions.

2) There was a bug when a new discarder created a transaction and refreshed the screen before verifying his account. Previously, this "screen refresh" advanced the transaction to accepted and sent out the "new transaction" email to the selected collector. The new state machine solves this problem...

ecycler has two users, Collectors and Discarders. Discarders make recyclables available from the home or business and Collectors pick up recyclables from discarders. Collectors redeem or sell the recyclables to a buyback or recycling center of their choice.

If you are new to ecycler here is how to get started as a Discarder...

The next step is go to ecycler, click on “Give away recyclables” and post a bag of recyclables. If you don’t have recyclables ready, we still ask you to post the choice: “I don't have recyclables right now but am willing to save them to give away, please contact me”. By choosing this, prospective ecycler collectors will see your posting and contact you via the site to pick up the recyclables. This way, you can continue to recycle the way you currently do and possibly switch to an ecycler collector when one contacts you.

If you are new to ecycler here is how to get started as a Collector...

Start marketing yourself locally with your poster or business cards that can be downloaded and printed from your dashboard on ecycler.com.

To attract residential customers--typically those who live in single family homes--we suggest placing your custom poster in coffee shops, grocery stores or any place that community postings are allowed.

To attract commercial customers we suggest that you contact them directly and provide them with a business card and your poster. You can direct them to your ecycler profile and point out your positive feedback that you may have received through numerous ecycler transactions to indicate that you are a reliable collector. In many areas single family residential homes have single-stream recycling (aka the city provided recycling bins). In these areas you may have more success approaching condos and businesses and arrange with the manager to collect the recyclables from the building.
